BANGALORE: Abhishek Kumar's body was found on a Belgaum railway track with his head, both hands and left leg missing. In an hour-and-a-half, the Belgaum railway police concluded that he committed suicide. But his family suspects that the cops have hushed up the engineering student's mysterious death based on a stranger's statement. Kameshwar Prasad, of Shenashtipur in Bihar, is inconsolable over the death of Abhishek, his son.
While the Prasad family suspects foul play, the Belgaum railway police say it was suicide.
Abhishek (25) was a II-semester student at KLE College of Engineering in Belgaum. Prasad's brother, Ajai Kumar, is a software engineer in Bangalore and was in constant touch with Abhishek. "On March 25, I got a call from his room-mate Vybhav's cellphone and the college principal spoke to me. He said Abhishek had been missing for two days and asked me to come over. The next day, when I went to Belgaum, the principal had identified the body, and even the post-mortem was over. The railway police had prepared a statement stating it was suicide," Ajai said. Vybhav saw Abhishek going for dinner on the evening of March 24. The railway police were informed about the body by a passerby, Gopu, and found a t-shirt near the track. "The railway police registered a case of unnatural death, but went by the statement of Gopu, who said Abhishek was fed up with life and ran against a running train. However, Gopu only saw the body," Ajai said. The police found a slip of paper in Abhishek's jeans pocket, with names of the KLE cricket team members. The sub-inspector went to the college and all these students were lined up. The principal confirmed it was Abhishek, as he hadn't turned up. "Abhishek had birthmarks on the missing parts of his body. He had a cut just above the right eyebrow and a burn mark on the left leg. We've been requesting the railway police to question his friends, but in vain," Ajai said. ambarish.bhat@timesgroup.com
